Vespula genus, not Vespa.

How big do these get? I saw something like this in my flower garden but it was about 1 1/2 to 2 inches long. Could it have been a yellow jacket?

Yellow jacket workers only get about one centimeter in length. You probably saw a yellow jacket drone or a yellow jacket queen starting a nest.
