This photo was not staged! The cicada killer wasp (Sphecius speciosus, Sphecidae) was trying to find her burrow and we got too close to her and she abandoned the cicada. I asked Dr. G. Ayers to lend me a piece of white paper and we put the cicada on the paper hoping she would return. She did about 2 times. She spent quite a bit of time in this position, with her mandibles moving. We were not sure what she was doing but this gave me a good opportunity to take this shot with a white background. MSU campus. July 22 (2:05:50 pm EST), 2003.
