A giant honey bee foraging on flowers of a willow (Salix spp, Salicaceae). The camera was almost seeing the bee totally from the underside. Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, China. April 2002.

What are the white markings on the underside of the honeybee's abdomen? Are they where the wax comes from? Is the white stuff wax?

No, these are just the white bands on the abdomen (also on the dorsal side, but for some reason darker). Foragers usually no longer can secret wax.
